Things we learned from Hurricane Ike:
Electricity is a beautiful thing;
Our neighbors are fantastic;
Trees are excellent cover but make bad hurricane material;
Ice is wonderful;
Refrigeration is divine;
Benjamin is undeterred by candlelit baths;
Losing food in the fridge/freezer isn't so bad - b/c some things needed to be purged - like old jellies, salsas...
Porches are an excellent way to relax;
Porch swings rock;
Crank radios are the ultimate life saver;
and 14-month old toddlers love life no matter the circumstance.
We all did well through this experience - we felt like we experienced a sophisticated style of camping. We had running water and shelter. We had dinner with our neighbors (when we say neighbors - we mean at least 8 households) several times. We learned a lot about our friends who live near us - some of the menu items included venison, steak, chicken, mashed potatoes, corn, and lots of veggies. When you have 8 household combine their food - it makes for a smörgåsbord of dishes. The term neighborly takes on a whole new meaning these days.
Thankfully, the cold front made things comfortable. We had no damage - just lots of tree debris thus we cannot complain - we have a home.
Our boarded home:
Benjamin helping us clean our driveway - he found lots of seeds/pods to put into his bucket.
We leave this entry with photographs of some shocking and/or crazy sights around the neighborhood.
Line of cars waiting for gasoline:
Point of Distribution for ice:
We will report more about our little monkey in another entry - because we all know that there is so much to say about this amazing growing human being who seems to be developing a stronger personality every single day.
And, if anyone is interested in buying one of these shirts - Frank is selling them for cheap. ;)
Mike D. - you were missed during this year's experience.
Till next time.
